How it works
Choose whether to add VAT to a price or take it out of one, enter the amount, and pick the rate. The rates come from gov.uk, linked below the calculator. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Adding VAT. Start from the net price, the amount before VAT, such as a supplier’s quote or the price you want to keep. The VAT is the net price times the rate: 20% for most goods, 5% at the reduced rate. The gross price your customer pays is the net price plus the VAT.
Removing VAT. Start from the gross price, such as a listing price or a receipt. The VAT is the gross price times the rate divided by 100 plus the rate, which at 20% is one sixth of the gross price and at 5% one twenty-first. Taking 20% off the gross price gives the wrong answer, because the VAT was added to the smaller net price.
Rounding. The VAT is rounded to the nearest penny, and the other figure is worked out from it, so net plus VAT always equals gross. Copy the VAT or the price you need with one click, or copy a link that opens the same calculation.
A list of prices. Paste a column of amounts from a spreadsheet to convert a whole price list at once. Each line is worked out and rounded on its own, the totals add up the rounded lines, and Copy table pastes the net, VAT and gross columns straight back into a spreadsheet.
Example
Four everyday VAT sums for a seller registered in the UK.
| Question | Working | Net | VAT | Gross |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supplier quotes £19.99 + VAT | £19.99 × 20% | £19.99 | £4.00 | £23.99 |
| Listing price £24.99 incl. VAT | £24.99 × 1/6 | £20.82 | £4.17 | £24.99 |
| Car seat at £50.00 + VAT | £50.00 × 5% | £50.00 | £2.50 | £52.50 |
| Receipt for £120.00 incl. VAT | £120.00 ÷ 1.2 | £100.00 | £20.00 | £120.00 |
On the £24.99 listing, £4.17 goes to HMRC and £20.82 is your revenue. That £20.82, not £24.99, is the price to use in the profit margin calculator.

FAQ
How do I add 20% VAT to a price?
Multiply the price before VAT by 0.2 to get the VAT, then add it on, or multiply by 1.2 in one step. £50.00 plus 20% VAT is £10.00 of VAT and £60.00 in total. At the 5% reduced rate, multiply by 1.05 instead, so £50.00 becomes £52.50.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the price including VAT by 1.2 at the standard rate, or work out the VAT as one sixth of the gross price, the VAT fraction for 20%. £120.00 including VAT is £100.00 plus £20.00 of VAT. Taking 20% off the gross price is a common mistake: it gives £96.00, which is wrong.
What are the current UK VAT rates?
There are three rates. The standard rate of 20% covers most goods and services and has applied since 4 January 2011. The reduced rate of 5% covers some things, such as children’s car seats and home energy. The zero rate covers most food and children’s clothes. Some things, such as postage stamps, are exempt.
When do I have to register for VAT?
You must register if your taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or if you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days. You can register voluntarily below that. A business based outside the UK that supplies goods or services to the UK must register whatever its turnover.
Who pays VAT when I sell through Amazon, eBay or Etsy?
If you’re based outside the UK, the online marketplace is liable for the VAT on goods it sells for you that are already in the UK, whatever their value. It also charges VAT at the sale on consignments of £135 or less sent from abroad to customers in Great Britain. UK-based sellers account for VAT on their own sales.
How does the calculator round VAT?
It works out the VAT on each amount and rounds it to the nearest penny, then works out the other figure from it, so net plus VAT always equals the gross price. For a list, each line is rounded on its own and the totals add up the rounded lines, the way an invoice with several lines does.
