How it works

Enter the payment amount, how the buyer pays, the currency you receive and where the buyer’s PayPal account is registered. Every rate comes from PayPal’s Merchant Fees page for Australian accounts, linked below the calculator, with the page’s own “last updated” date.

Percentage fee. Commercial transactions, including PayPal Checkout, goods and services and money requests, cost 2.90%. Payments through a PayPal QR code cost 1.20%. Buyers whose PayPal account is registered outside Australia add 1.00% to either rate.

Fixed fee. Commercial transactions add a fixed fee set by the currency you receive: A$0.30 in Australian dollars, US$0.30 in US dollars. PayPal’s page shows no fixed fee for QR code payments. The percentage part is rounded to the cent, then the fixed fee is added.

Conversion. If PayPal converts a payment you received in another currency into Australian dollars, its exchange rate is 3.0% above the base rate. Tick the box to take that off what’s left after fees.

What to charge. Switch to What to charge and enter the amount you need to receive. The calculator works out the payment that leaves at least that much after every fee, to the cent, which helps with invoices. PayPal’s disclosure document (CFSGPDS) prevails if it differs from the fees page.

Example

Payments of A$100 into an Australian business account, received in Australian dollars.

PayPal Checkout, buyer in Australia2.9% + A$0.30A$3.20A$96.80

QR code, buyer outside Australia2.2%, no fixed feeA$2.20A$97.80

To receive exactly A$100 from a buyer in Australia, ask for A$103.30: the fee on that is A$3.00 plus A$0.30. A US buyer paying US$100 that PayPal converts to Australian dollars leaves US$95.80 after fees, then 3%, US$2.87, comes off in the conversion.
