How it works

Enter the payment amount, how the buyer pays, and the currency you receive it in. Every rate comes from PayPal’s Merchant Fees page for business accounts of US residents, linked below the calculator, and the page’s own “last updated” date is shown next to it.

Percentage fee. Each way of paying has its own rate: 3.49% for PayPal Checkout, Guest Checkout and Venmo, 2.99% for standard card payments and for goods and services payments, 4.99% for Pay Later and 2.29% for QR codes. If the buyer is outside the US, PayPal adds 1.50%.

Fixed fee. Most payments add a fixed fee set by the currency you receive, $0.49 in US dollars. Goods and services payments have none, and QR code payments have a smaller one. The percentage part is rounded to the cent, then the fixed fee is added.

Conversion. If PayPal converts the money into another currency for you, it builds a 3% spread into the exchange rate. Tick the box to take it off what’s left after fees.

What to charge. Switch to What to charge and enter the amount you need to receive. The calculator works out the payment that leaves at least that much after every fee, to the cent, which is useful for invoices and passing fees on where that’s allowed.

Example

Four payments into a US business account, all in US dollars.

PaymentWorkingFeeYou receive
$100 PayPal Checkout, US buyer3.49% + $0.49$3.98$96.02
$100 PayPal Checkout, buyer abroad4.99% + $0.49$5.48$94.52
$100 goods and services2.99%$2.99$97.01
$500 card payment2.99% + $0.49$15.44$484.56

To receive exactly $100 from a US buyer paying through PayPal Checkout, ask for $104.12: the fee on that is $3.63 plus $0.49. If the buyer is abroad and PayPal converts the money to another currency, the $100 payment leaves $91.68 after the 1.50% international fee and the 3% conversion spread.

FAQ

How much does PayPal charge to receive a payment?

For a US business account, PayPal Checkout, Guest Checkout and Venmo payments cost 3.49% plus a fixed fee of $0.49. Standard card payments cost 2.99% plus $0.49 and Pay Later 4.99% plus $0.49. On a $100 Checkout payment that is $3.98, so you receive $96.02.

What is the PayPal goods and services fee?

When someone sends you money for goods and services, PayPal’s Merchant Fees page lists 2.99% with no fixed fee for US accounts. A $100 payment costs $2.99. It gives the buyer purchase protection, unlike friends and family payments, which aren’t for buying and selling.

How much is the PayPal international fee?

If the buyer’s PayPal account is in another market, PayPal adds 1.50% to the domestic rate. A $100 Checkout payment from abroad costs 4.99% plus $0.49, which is $5.48. If PayPal also converts the money into another currency for you, a 3% spread is built into the exchange rate.

How do I work out what to charge to receive an exact amount?

Choose What to charge and enter the amount you want to keep. The calculator adds the fee back: to receive $100 from a domestic Checkout payment, ask for $104.12. It checks the answer to the cent, because PayPal rounds the percentage fee and adds the fixed fee separately.

What is the PayPal fixed fee in other currencies?

The fixed fee depends on the currency you receive: $0.49 for US dollars, £0.39 for pounds, €0.39 for euros, C$0.59 for Canadian and A$0.59 for Australian dollars. QR code payments have a smaller fixed fee, $0.09 in US dollars, with a 2.29% rate.

Does PayPal refund its fees when I refund a buyer?

This calculator covers the fee for receiving a payment. Refunds, chargebacks, disputes, instant transfers and micropayments have their own rules and fees on PayPal’s Merchant Fees page. Rates for PayPal accounts outside the US are different too, so check the page for your country.
