Invoices

Invoice payments cost 3.49% plus the fixed fee when paid by PayPal or Venmo, 2.99% plus the fixed fee by card or wallet, and 4.99% plus the fixed fee by Pay Later. A $500 invoice paid by card costs $15.44.

International payments

  • Payments from buyers outside the US add 1.5%: $100 through PayPal Checkout costs $5.48, and a goods-and-services payment $4.49.
  • The fixed fee follows the currency you receive: $0.49 in US dollars, £0.39 in pounds, €0.39 in euros, C$0.59 in Canadian dollars and A$0.59 in Australian dollars. £100 received through Checkout costs £3.88.
  • If PayPal converts a balance or payment for you, its exchange rate includes a 3% margin above the base rate.

What to charge

To receive exactly $100 from a domestic PayPal Checkout payment, ask for $104.12: 3.49% of that plus $0.49 is $4.12. Check card network rules and your state’s law before adding a surcharge for paying by PayPal.

PayPal or a card processor?

On the same domestic card payment, Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢, $3.20 on $100, against $3.48 for PayPal’s standard card payments. PayPal is the way to accept a buyer’s PayPal balance and Venmo. See Stripe vs PayPal fees.
