How it works
Enter the order, your province and where the buyer is. Etsy’s rates come from its Help Center for shops with a Canadian bank account, and GST/HST rates by province from the Canada Revenue Agency, both linked below the calculator.
Fees on every order. Etsy takes a 6.5% transaction fee and a 0.50% regulatory operating fee on the order total, the item price plus shipping and gift wrap. Payment processing is 3% plus C$0.25 for buyers in Canada or the US and 4% plus C$0.25 for others, on the total sale price including any tax Etsy collects from the buyer.
If you’re not registered for GST/HST. For a buyer in Canada, Etsy adds GST/HST at the buyer’s provincial rate at checkout and pays it to the government. It then doesn’t charge you GST/HST on the transaction and processing fees, but does on the regulatory fee, the listing fee and ads, at your province’s rate.
If you are registered. GST/HST is already in your price, so the calculator takes off the tax you owe on a Canadian sale. Etsy charges GST/HST on every fee, which the calculator adds back as a credit you can usually claim. Provincial PST in British Columbia and QST in Quebec on Etsy’s fees aren’t included.
Profit. What Etsy deposits is the order total minus every fee. Profit takes off your costs and any GST/HST owed. Set a profit target to see the lowest price that reaches it, and copy a link to share the exact numbers.
Example
An Ontario shop sells a C$40.00 item with C$10.00 shipping, costing C$25.00 in total to make, ship and pack.
| Seller and buyer | Fees | Total fees | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Not registered, buyer in Ontario | C$3.25 + C$1.95 + C$0.25 + C$0.03 HST | C$5.48 | C$19.52 |
| Not registered, buyer outside Canada and the US | C$3.25 + C$2.25 + C$0.25 + C$0.75 HST | C$6.50 | C$18.50 |
| GST/HST registered, buyer in Ontario | C$5.25 + C$0.68 HST (claimed back), HST owed C$5.75 | C$5.93 | C$14.00 |
For the Ontario buyer, Etsy adds 13% HST (C$6.50) at checkout, so payment processing is 3% of C$56.50 plus C$0.25. Only the C$0.25 regulatory fee carries HST for the unregistered seller.

FAQ
How much does Etsy take from a Canadian sale?
A Canadian shop pays a 6.5% transaction fee and a 0.50% regulatory operating fee on the item price, shipping and gift wrap, plus payment processing of 3% and C$0.25 for buyers in Canada or the US. GST/HST is added to some or all of those fees. On a C$40 item with C$10 shipping to Ontario that comes to C$5.48 for a seller not registered for GST/HST.
Does Etsy charge GST/HST on seller fees in Canada?
Yes, at your province’s rate. If you’re registered for GST/HST and have added your ID, it is charged on every fee and you can usually claim it back. If you’re not registered and Etsy charged the buyer GST/HST on the order, the transaction and payment processing fees are exempt, but listing, ads and other fees are still taxed.
When does Etsy collect GST/HST from Canadian buyers?
When you ship a physical item from Canada to a buyer in Canada and haven’t added a GST/HST ID, Etsy adds GST/HST at checkout and pays it to the tax authorities. If you have added an ID, Etsy doesn’t, and you include GST/HST in your listing price and remit it yourself. Etsy also collects PST in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
What is the Etsy regulatory operating fee in Canada?
It is 0.50% of the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, charged to sellers based in Canada on every order. Etsy charges it in several countries because of the cost of complying with local regulations. As a seller fee other than the transaction and processing fees, it carries GST/HST whether or not you’re registered.
Do I have to register for GST/HST to sell on Etsy?
Etsy’s guidance follows the Canadian rule: you must register for GST/HST once your sales pass C$30,000. Below that you may choose not to, and Etsy collects GST/HST from your Canadian buyers for you. Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia have their own provincial tax rules as well.
Why is payment processing higher on some orders?
Etsy charges Canadian shops 3% plus C$0.25 on domestic orders and orders from the US, and 4% plus C$0.25 on orders from anywhere else. The percentage is taken from the total sale price including shipping and any sales tax Etsy collects, so a taxed Canadian order pays processing on the tax too.
