How it works

Enter one online order: the item price, the shipping you charge, the buyer’s sales tax, and what the item, postage and packaging cost you. Pick your plan and how you take payments. Every rate comes from Shopify’s pricing page for US stores, with the date they were last checked under the calculator.

Card fees. With Shopify Payments, each order pays the plan’s online card rate on the amount charged to the card, which includes shipping and sales tax: 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% on Grow, 2.5% on Advanced and 2.25% on Plus. Premium cards cost more, and cards issued outside the US add 1%.

Other payment providers. Using a provider other than Shopify Payments adds Shopify’s third-party transaction fee, 2% on Basic down to 0.2% on Plus, on top of the provider’s own fee, which you enter as a percentage and a fixed amount. Both are worked out on the amount charged.

The plan. Basic is $39 a month or $29 a month billed yearly; Grow $105 or $79; Advanced $399 or $299; Plus starts at $2,300. Enter your orders a month to spread the plan across them, or leave it at 0 to see the per-order fees alone. The yearly price is what you pay each month when you commit to a year.

Profit. What you keep is the item price and shipping, minus fees, the item, postage and other costs. Shopify doesn’t bring buyers the way a marketplace does, so add your ad cost per order to Other costs for a real number. The table below the calculator prices the same sale on four marketplaces.

Example

A $50 item with $8 shipping and 7% sales tax, paid by a standard US card. The item cost $20, postage $7 and packaging $1. Orders a month left at 0.

PlanCard rateFeeYou keep
Basic2.9% + 30¢ on $62.06$2.10$27.90

Advanced2.5% + 30¢$1.85$28.15
Plus2.25% + 30¢$1.70$28.30

With 100 orders a month, Basic billed yearly adds $0.29 and you keep $27.61. Paid through a provider charging 3.49% + 49¢ instead, fees are $3.90: $2.66 to the provider and $1.24 to Shopify. To keep $15 on Basic, sell for at least $36.69.

FAQ

How much does Shopify take from a sale?

Shopify charges no commission on sales. With Shopify Payments you pay the card rate of your plan: 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced and 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus for online standard cards. On a $50 item with $8 shipping and 7% tax charged to the card, Basic costs $2.10.

What are Shopify’s third-party transaction fees?

If you take payments through another provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of the provider’s own fee. Choose Another payment provider and enter that provider’s rate to see both.

Do premium and international cards cost more?

Yes. Premium cards, such as rewards and business cards, cost 3.5% + 30¢ on Basic down to 2.95% + 30¢ on Plus. Cards issued outside the US add 1% on every plan. Pick the card type and tick International card to see the difference on your order.

How is the Shopify plan included?

The plan is a monthly subscription, not a per-order fee: Basic is $39 a month billed monthly or $29 billed yearly. Enter your orders a month and the calculator divides the plan price across them. With 100 orders a month, Basic billed yearly adds $0.29 to each order.

Why does Shopify look cheaper than marketplaces?

Marketplaces such as eBay, Etsy and Amazon bring buyers to your listings and charge a commission for it. Shopify is your own store, so its fees are mostly card processing, but you pay to bring visitors through ads, email or social media. Add your ad cost per order as an other cost for a fair comparison.

Are apps, themes and shipping labels included?

No. Paid apps, a paid theme, domains, Shopify Shipping labels and currency conversion are separate costs that depend on your store. Add any that you pay per order to Other costs. Rates here are for US stores on Shopify’s pricing page, checked on the date shown under the calculator.
