How it works

Enter the payment amount, how the buyer pays, the currency you receive and where the buyer’s PayPal account is registered. Every rate comes from PayPal’s Merchant Fees page for Canadian business accounts, linked below the calculator, with the page’s own “last updated” date.

Percentage fee. Commercial transactions, including PayPal Checkout and goods and services, cost 2.9%. PayPal Pay Later costs 4.9%, and QR codes 1.90% at C$10.01 and above or 2.40% at C$10.00 and below. Buyers in the US add 0.8% and buyers anywhere else 1%.

Fixed fee. Each payment adds a fixed fee set by the currency you receive: C$0.30 in Canadian dollars, with smaller fees for QR codes. The percentage part is rounded to the cent, then the fixed fee is added.

Conversion. If PayPal converts a payment you received in another currency, its rate is at least 4% above the base exchange rate. Tick the box to take that off what’s left after fees.

What to charge. Switch to What to charge and enter the amount you need to receive. The calculator works out the payment that leaves at least that much after every fee, to the cent, which helps with invoices.

Example

Payments of C$100 into a Canadian business account, received in Canadian dollars.

PaymentWorkingFeeYou receive
PayPal Checkout, Canadian buyer2.9% + C$0.30C$3.20C$96.80
PayPal Checkout, US buyer3.7% + C$0.30C$4.00C$96.00
PayPal Checkout, buyer in the UK3.9% + C$0.30C$4.20C$95.80
Pay Later, Canadian buyer4.9% + C$0.30C$5.20C$94.80

To receive exactly C$100 from a Canadian buyer, ask for C$103.30: the fee on that is C$3.00 plus C$0.30. A US buyer paying US$100 that PayPal converts to Canadian dollars leaves US$96.00 after fees, then 4%, US$3.84, comes off in the conversion.
