How it works

Enter the order: the item price, postage and gift wrap the buyer paid, and what the item, postage and packaging cost you. Every rate comes from Etsy’s Help Center for shops with a UK bank account, linked below the calculator.

Fees on every order. Etsy takes a 6.5% transaction fee and a 0.48% regulatory operating fee on the order total, the item price plus postage and gift wrap. Payment processing is 4% of the total sale price plus £0.20 per order.

VAT. If you haven’t added a VAT ID to Etsy, 20% VAT is added to each fee. If you’re VAT-registered and have added your VAT ID, Etsy doesn’t charge VAT on its fees, but the calculator takes off the VAT you owe HMRC on a UK sale, one sixth of the price. Sales to buyers outside the UK are exports, so no VAT is owed on them.

Ads and the listing fee. Choose whether the order came through an Offsite Ad, at 15% or 12%, and add any Etsy Ads spend. The $0.20 listing fee and the $100 Offsite Ads cap are set in US dollars, so enter the exchange rate from your Payment account to include them in pounds.

Profit. What Etsy deposits is the order total minus every fee. Profit takes off your costs and any VAT owed. Set a profit target to see the lowest price that reaches it, and copy a link to share the exact numbers.

Example

A £30.00 item with £4.00 postage, costing £14.00 in total to make, post and pack, sold to a UK buyer.

ShopFeesTotal feesProfit
No VAT ID£2.21 + £1.56 + £0.16 + £0.79 VAT£4.72£15.28
VAT-registered, VAT ID added£2.21 + £1.56 + £0.16, VAT owed £5.67£3.93£10.40
No VAT ID, order from an Offsite Ad at 15%adds £5.10 + VAT£10.84£9.16

The transaction fee is 6.5% of £34.00, payment processing is 4% of £34.00 plus 20p, and the regulatory fee is 0.48% of £34.00. An Offsite Ad sale costs more than twice as much in fees as an ordinary one.

FAQ

How much does Etsy take from a UK sale?

A UK shop pays a 6.5% transaction fee and a 0.48% regulatory operating fee on the item price, postage and gift wrap, plus payment processing of 4% and £0.20. Without a VAT ID, 20% VAT is added to those fees. On a £30 item with £4 postage that comes to £4.72, about 13.9% of the £34 the buyer paid.

What is the Etsy regulatory operating fee in the UK?

It is 0.48% of the item price plus postage and gift wrap, charged to sellers based in the UK on every order. Etsy added it because of the cost of complying with regulations in some countries. Like Etsy’s other seller fees, it is subject to VAT for UK shops that haven’t added a VAT ID.

Do UK sellers pay VAT on Etsy fees?

Yes, unless you have added a VAT ID to your Etsy account. Etsy charges VAT on its seller fees for UK shops without one, and gives you a monthly VAT invoice. Once a VAT ID is added, Etsy stops charging it, but as a VAT-registered seller you owe VAT on your UK sales, one sixth of a VAT-inclusive price.

How much is the Etsy listing fee in pounds?

Etsy sets the listing fee at 0.20 US dollars and converts it to your payment account currency at the market rate when it is charged, so the pound amount moves with the exchange rate. Enter the rate shown in your Payment account to count it; the calculator then also turns the $100 Offsite Ads cap into pounds.

How do Offsite Ads fees work for UK shops?

When a buyer clicks an Etsy ad on another website and buys within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the order total, or 12% if your shop has made $10,000 or more in any 365 days. The fee never goes above $100 for one order. Without a VAT ID, VAT is added to it like the other fees.

Is Etsy cheaper than eBay for UK sellers?

It depends on your account. UK-based private sellers pay no final value fee on eBay, so for occasional sales eBay is cheaper. Business sellers pay eBay 12.9% in most categories, plus a per-order and regulatory fee, against Etsy’s 6.5% plus 4% and 20p. Use the eBay UK calculator to compare your own sale.
