How it works
Enter one order: the item price, the shipping and gift wrap the buyer paid, what the item and the postage cost you, and the buyer’s sales tax rate. Every rate comes from Etsy’s Help Center for US shops listing in US dollars, linked below the calculator.
Order total. Etsy’s order total is the item price plus shipping plus gift wrap. It doesn’t include the sales tax Etsy collects.
The three basic fees. The listing fee is $0.20, paid when you publish and again when an auto-renewed listing sells. The transaction fee is 6.5% of the order total. Payment processing through Etsy Payments is 3% of the order total plus sales tax, plus $0.25 per order.
Advertising. If the order came from an Offsite Ad, Etsy charges 15% of the order total, or 12% once your shop has made $10,000 in any 365 days, capped at $100 per order. Etsy Ads are pay per click, so enter what you spent per order and it is added as a cost. One order never pays both: if the buyer’s last click before buying was an Etsy Ad, only the Etsy Ads cost applies.
Profit. The deposit is the order total minus Etsy’s fees; the sales tax goes to the state. Profit is the deposit minus the item, postage and other costs, and margin is profit as a share of the order total. Enter a target profit to get the lowest item price that reaches it. Below the calculator, the same sale is priced on eBay with no Store and no promotion, with a link that opens it in the eBay calculator.
Example
A $50 item with $8 shipping charged, sold to a buyer with 7% sales tax on item and shipping. The item cost $20, postage $7 and packaging $1. No ads, listing fee counted.
| Line | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | flat | $0.20 |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% of $58.00 | $3.77 |
| Payment processing | 3% of $62.06 + $0.25 | $2.11 |
| Total Etsy fees | $6.08 | |
| Deposit | $58.00 − $6.08 | $51.92 |
| Profit | $51.92 − $20 − $7 − $1 | $23.92 |
That is a 41.2% margin, with fees at 10.5% of the $58 order total. If the same order came through an Offsite Ad at 15%, Etsy adds $8.70, fees become $14.78 and profit falls to $15.22. To keep $15 profit without ads, the item has to sell for at least $40.12; on an Offsite Ads order, $49.70.

FAQ
How much does Etsy take from a sale?
A US shop pays a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price, shipping and gift wrap, and payment processing of 3% plus $0.25 on the total including sales tax. On a $50 item with $8 shipping and 7% sales tax that is $6.08, about 10.5% of the $58 the buyer paid you.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Yes on shipping: the 6.5% transaction fee and Offsite Ads both include what the buyer paid for shipping and gift wrap. Sales tax is only in the payment processing fee, which Etsy takes from the total sale price including tax. Etsy collects the tax and pays it to the state, so it isn’t yours to keep.
How do Offsite Ads fees work?
When a buyer clicks an Etsy ad on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest or another partner site and buys within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the order total. Shops that made $10,000 or more in any 365-day period pay 12% and can’t opt out. The fee never exceeds $100 for one order.
Do I pay the $0.20 listing fee on every sale?
You pay it when you publish a listing, whether or not the item sells. If the listing is set to auto-renew, Etsy charges another $0.20 when it sells, to put it back up. Selling more than one quantity in an order costs $0.20 for each extra item. Untick the option if your listing fee is already paid.
Is Etsy cheaper than eBay?
Often, before ads. On the example sale Etsy charges $6.08 and eBay $8.84, because eBay’s 13.6% final value fee is higher than Etsy’s 6.5% plus 3% processing. An order through Offsite Ads changes that: at 15% the Etsy fees rise to $14.78. The table under the calculator compares your own numbers.
Does this work for shops outside the US?
Not yet. Payment processing rates differ by country, for example 4% + £0.20 in the UK, and shops in the UK, Canada, France, Italy, Spain and some other countries also pay a Regulatory Operating fee. Selling in a currency other than your bank account’s adds a 2.5% conversion fee.
