How it works
Choose whether to add GST to a price or take it out of one, enter the amount in Australian dollars, and pick taxable or GST-free. The rate and rules come from the ATO, linked below the calculator. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
Adding GST. Start from the price before GST, such as a supplier’s quote or the amount you want to keep. The GST is 10% of it, and the total your customer pays is the price plus the GST, which is the same as multiplying by 1.1.
Removing GST. Start from a price that includes GST, such as a shelf or listing price. The GST is one-eleventh of it, and the price before GST is the rest. Taking 10% off the total gives the wrong answer, because the 10% was added to the smaller price before GST.
Rounding. The GST is rounded to the nearest cent, and the other figure is worked out from it, so the price before GST plus the GST always equals the total. Copy the GST or the price you need with one click, or copy a link that opens the same calculation.
A list of prices. Paste a column of amounts from a spreadsheet to convert a whole price list at once. Each line is worked out and rounded on its own, the totals add up the rounded lines, and Copy table pastes the three columns straight back into a spreadsheet.
Example
Four everyday GST sums for a business registered for GST.
| Question | Working | Before GST | GST | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supplier quotes A$100.00 + GST | A$100.00 × 10% | A$100.00 | A$10.00 | A$110.00 |
| Listing price A$49.95 incl. GST | A$49.95 ÷ 11 | A$45.41 | A$4.54 | A$49.95 |
| Invoice for A$1,100.00 incl. GST | A$1,100.00 ÷ 11 | A$1,000.00 | A$100.00 | A$1,100.00 |
| Basic food at A$20.00, GST-free | no GST | A$20.00 | A$0.00 | A$20.00 |
On the A$49.95 listing, A$4.54 is GST you pay to the ATO and A$45.41 is your revenue. Use A$45.41, not A$49.95, as the selling price in the profit margin calculator.

Registration threshold: A$75,000 of GST turnover, or A$150,000 for non-profit bodies. Overseas sellers: see the ATO’s guidance on sales to Australian consumers.
FAQ
How do I add GST to a price?
GST in Australia is 10%, so multiply the price before GST by 0.1 to get the GST, or by 1.1 to get the total in one step. A$100.00 plus GST is A$10.00 of GST and A$110.00 in total. A$49.95 plus GST is A$5.00 of GST, rounded to the cent, and A$54.95 in total.
How do I work out the GST in a price that includes it?
Divide the GST-inclusive price by 11. GST is one-eleventh of a price that includes it, so A$110.00 contains A$10.00 of GST and A$100.00 before GST. Taking 10% off the total is a common mistake: it gives A$99.00, because the 10% was added to the smaller amount before GST.
What is GST-free?
GST-free sales don’t have GST in their price, but you can still claim GST credits for things you buy to make them. The ATO lists most basic food and exports among them. Choose the GST-free rate to see a price with no GST added; the calculator shows A$0.00 of GST.
When do I have to register for GST?
You must register within 21 days once your GST turnover reaches A$75,000, or A$150,000 for a non-profit body. That’s either your current turnover, this month and the previous 11, or your projected turnover, this month and the next 11. Below the threshold you can register voluntarily, and should then stay registered for at least 12 months.
Do overseas sellers have to charge Australian GST?
An overseas business that sells low-value imported goods, services or digital products to Australian consumers counts those sales towards the A$75,000 threshold, and must register and charge GST once it reaches it. Goods worth A$1,000 or less are then taxed at the point of sale rather than at the border.
Do exports count towards the GST threshold?
Yes. Exports are generally GST-free, so you don’t add GST to them, but the ATO says export sales connected with Australia still count when you work out your GST turnover. A business that sells mostly overseas can reach the A$75,000 threshold and need to register even though it charges little GST.
