How it works

Choose whether to add tax to a price or take it out of one, enter the amount in Canadian dollars, and pick the province or territory where the sale is made. The rates come from the Canada Revenue Agency, linked below the calculator. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

The rate. Each province maps to one rate: 5% GST in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, Saskatchewan and the territories; 13% HST in Ontario; 14% HST in Nova Scotia; and 15% HST in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. When you sell online, use the province where the customer receives the goods, not the one you ship from.

Adding tax. Start from the price before tax. The GST or HST is the price times the rate, and the total is the price plus the tax. Removing tax. Start from a price that includes it. The tax is the price times the rate divided by 100 plus the rate, which in Ontario means dividing the total by 1.13 to get the price before HST.

Rounding. The tax is rounded to the nearest cent, and the other figure is worked out from it, so the price before tax plus the tax always equals the total. Copy any figure with one click, or copy a link that opens the same calculation.

A list of prices. Paste a column of amounts from a spreadsheet to convert a whole price list for one province. Each line is rounded on its own, the totals add up the rounded lines, and Copy table pastes the three columns back into a spreadsheet. Provincial sales tax and QST are not included.

Example

Four sales by a business registered for GST/HST.

SaleWorkingBefore taxTaxTotal
C$100.00 + tax, shipped to OntarioC$100.00 × 13% HSTC$100.00C$13.00C$113.00
C$100.00 + tax, shipped to AlbertaC$100.00 × 5% GSTC$100.00C$5.00C$105.00
C$114.00 incl. HST, Nova ScotiaC$114.00 ÷ 1.14C$100.00C$14.00C$114.00
C$49.99 incl. HST, New BrunswickC$49.99 ÷ 1.15C$43.47C$6.52C$49.99

The same C$100.00 item costs the customer C$113.00 in Ontario and C$105.00 in Alberta, but you keep C$100.00 either way. That is the price to use in the profit margin calculator.

FAQ

What is the difference between GST and HST?

GST is the 5% federal tax charged across Canada. Five provinces, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, combine it with a provincial part into one harmonized sales tax, the HST. In the other provinces and the territories you charge 5% GST, and any provincial sales tax is separate.

What are the HST rates by province?

Ontario charges 13% HST. Nova Scotia charges 14% on or after 1 April 2025, down from 15%. New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island charge 15%. Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut have 5% GST instead of HST.

How do I remove HST from a price?

Divide the price including HST by one plus the rate. In Ontario, divide by 1.13: C$113.00 is C$100.00 plus C$13.00 of HST. At 15%, divide by 1.15, so C$49.99 contains C$6.52 of HST. Taking 13% off the total gives the wrong answer, because the tax was added to the smaller price.

Which rate do I charge when I sell to a customer in another province?

The rate depends on the province where the sale is made under the CRA’s place-of-supply rules, not where your business is. For goods you ship, that is generally the province they’re delivered to. A seller in Alberta shipping to Ontario charges 13% HST; the same seller shipping within Alberta charges 5% GST.

When do I have to register for GST/HST?

You are a small supplier and don’t have to register while your taxable revenues stay at $30,000 or less, both in any single calendar quarter and over the last four consecutive quarters. Once you go over, you must register and charge GST/HST. Public service bodies use $50,000. You can register voluntarily, and must then stay registered for at least a year.

Does the calculator include PST or QST?

No. It works out the federal GST and the HST, which the CRA administers. British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan charge their own provincial sales tax on top of the 5% GST, under their own rules and rates. Check that province’s tax authority and add it separately where it applies.
