How it works

Enter the payment amount, how the buyer pays, the currency you receive and where the buyer’s PayPal account is registered. Every rate comes from PayPal’s Merchant Fees page for UK business accounts, linked below the calculator, and the page’s own “last updated” date is shown next to it.

Percentage fee. Most payments, including PayPal Checkout and goods and services, cost 2.9%. Card payments from buyers without a PayPal account cost 1.2%, Buy Now Pay Later 3.9%, and QR codes 1.5% at £10.01 and above or 2% at £10.00 and below. Buyers in the EEA add 1.29% and buyers anywhere else 1.99%.

Fixed fee. Each payment adds a fixed fee set by the currency you receive: 30p in pounds, with smaller fees for QR codes. The percentage part is rounded to the penny, then the fixed fee is added. If you’re on PayPal’s tiered plan, pick your tier to replace the 2.9% rate.

Conversion. If PayPal converts the money into pounds for you, its rate is 3% above the base exchange rate. Tick the box to take that off what’s left after fees.

What to charge. Switch to What to charge and enter the amount you need to receive. The calculator works out the payment that leaves at least that much after every fee, to the penny, which helps with invoices.

Example

Payments of £100 into a UK business account, received in pounds.

PayPal Checkout, UK buyer2.9% + 30p£3.20£96.80
PayPal Checkout, buyer in France4.19% + 30p£4.49£95.51
PayPal Checkout, buyer in the US4.89% + 30p£5.19£94.81

To receive exactly £100 from a UK buyer, ask for £103.30: the fee on that is £3.00 plus 30p. On the tiered plan with over £8,000 of sales last month, the same £100 payment costs £2.40 instead of £3.20.

FAQ

How much does PayPal charge to receive a payment in the UK?

For a UK business account, PayPal Checkout and other commercial payments cost 2.9% plus a fixed fee of 30p when you receive pounds. On a £100 payment that is £3.20, so you receive £96.80. Buy Now Pay Later payments cost 3.9% plus 30p, and card payments from buyers without a PayPal account 1.2% plus 30p.

What are PayPal’s international fees for UK sellers?

If the buyer’s PayPal account is outside the UK, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man, PayPal adds 1.29% for buyers in the European Economic Area and 1.99% for buyers anywhere else. A £100 payment from a US buyer costs 4.89% plus 30p, which is £5.19. Payments from the Channel Islands and Isle of Man count as domestic.

What is the PayPal fixed fee in the UK?

It depends on the currency you receive: 30p for pounds, €0.35 for euros, $0.30 for US dollars and A$0.30 for Australian dollars. QR code payments have smaller fixed fees: 10p at £10.01 and above, and 5p at £10.00 and below, with rates of 1.5% and 2% instead of 2.9%.

How does the PayPal tiered rate plan work?

It is an optional plan you request from PayPal. Your rate for the month depends on last month’s eligible sales: 2.9% up to £4,000, 2.4% from £4,000 to £8,000, and 2.1% above £8,000, plus the fixed fee. It only changes the rate for All Other Commercial Transactions, not Pay Later or QR codes.

How much does PayPal charge to convert currency in the UK?

When PayPal converts money in a business account, its exchange rate is 3% above the base exchange rate. If you receive dollars from a US buyer and have PayPal turn them into pounds, that 3% comes on top of the 2.9%, the 1.99% international fee and the fixed fee. Holding the balance in dollars avoids it.

How do I work out what to charge to receive an exact amount?

Choose What to charge and enter the amount you want to keep. The calculator finds the lowest payment, to the penny, that leaves at least that much after every fee. To receive £100 from a domestic payment, ask for £103.30. Check card scheme rules and the law before adding a surcharge for paying by PayPal.
