How it works

Enter one order: the price it sold for, the shipping the buyer paid, what the item and the postage cost you, and the buyer’s sales tax rate. Pick the category, your eBay Store and seller level. Every rate comes from eBay’s own fee pages for eBay.com, linked below the calculator.

Total amount of the sale. eBay charges its percentage fees on the item price plus shipping charged plus sales tax. That total decides which rate applies, too.

Final value fee. Most categories charge 13.6% up to $7,500 and 2.35% on the part above it. Some charge the whole sale at one rate depending on its size, such as handbags (15% up to $2,000, otherwise 9%) and athletic shoes (8% from $150, with no per-order fee). Basic, Premium, Anchor and Enterprise Stores have their own, usually lower, table. Add the per-order fee: $0.30 on orders of $10 or less, $0.40 above.

Adjustments. Top Rated Plus takes 10% off the percentage part. Below Standard adds 6% of the total sale, or 7% after four months. Selling to a buyer outside the US without eBay International Shipping adds 1.65%. A Promoted Listings general campaign charges your ad rate on the total sale. The insertion fee of $0.35 only counts once your free listings for the month are used up.

Profit. Payout is what the buyer paid for the item and shipping, minus eBay’s fees; the sales tax goes to the state. Profit is payout minus the item, postage and other costs. Enter a target profit to get the lowest price that reaches it, and check the Store table to see whether a subscription would pay for itself at your sales volume.

Example

A $50 item in a standard category, $8 shipping charged, sold to a buyer with 7% sales tax on item and shipping. The item cost $20, postage $7 and packaging $1. No Store, Above Standard, not promoted.

LineWorkingAmount
Total amount of the sale$50 + $8 + $4.06 tax$62.06
Final value fee13.6% of $62.06$8.44
Per-order feeorder over $10$0.40
Total eBay fees$8.84
Payout$58.00 − $8.84$49.16
Profit$49.16 − $20 − $7 − $1$21.16

That is a 36.5% margin and 15.2% of the $58 in fees. As a Top Rated Plus seller the fees drop to $8.00. With a Basic Store they are $8.28, a $0.56 saving, so the $21.95 monthly subscription pays for itself from 40 sales like this a month. A 5% promoted ad rate adds $3.10. To keep $15 profit, the item has to sell for at least $42.79.

eBay fees in 2026

eBay.com final value fees by category, from eBay’s Selling fees and Store selling fees pages, checked 2026-10-29. Starter Stores pay the standard rates. Every order also pays $0.30 (orders of $10 or less) or $0.40 per order, except athletic shoes from $150.

FAQ

How much does eBay take from a sale?

For most categories without a Store, eBay charges a 13.6% final value fee on the total amount of the sale up to $7,500, plus a $0.40 per-order fee on orders over $10. On a $50 item with $8 shipping and 7% sales tax, that is $8.84, about 15% of the $58 the buyer paid you.

Why does eBay charge fees on sales tax?

eBay defines the total amount of the sale as the item price, handling, shipping charged and sales tax, and its percentage fees apply to that total. eBay collects and pays the tax to the state, so you don’t keep it, but you still pay the final value fee on it. Enter the buyer’s tax rate for an exact figure.

Is an eBay Store worth it?

Basic and higher Stores lower the final value fee in most categories, for example 12.7% instead of 13.6%, and the threshold for the 2.35% rate drops to $2,500. The table under the calculator shows the saving on your sale and how many sales a month cover each subscription. Starter Stores pay the standard rates.

How does the Top Rated Plus discount work?

Top Rated sellers whose listings offer same- or one-business-day handling and 30-day free returns get 10% off the final value fee. It applies to the percentage part only, not the $0.30 or $0.40 per-order fee, and only to sellers resident in the US when selling on eBay.com. On a $8.44 fee the discount is $0.84.

What does Below Standard cost?

If your account is Below Standard at the evaluation on the 20th of the month, eBay adds 6% of the total amount of the sale to every sale the following month. After four or more months in a row it rises to 7%. Above Standard and Top Rated sellers don’t pay it.

Does this work for eBay UK, Canada or Australia?

Not yet. These rates are for eBay.com, sellers registered in the US. eBay.co.uk, eBay.ca and eBay.com.au have their own fee tables, and VAT or GST is charged on seller fees there. Vehicles on eBay Motors and Real Estate listings have their own fees too and aren’t covered here.
