Which Shopify Plan Should You Choose?

Shopify’s higher plans cost more each month but charge less on every card payment. Which one is cheapest depends on how much you sell. This guide compares the US plans using Shopify’s pricing page, checked in October 2026.
The plans

Cards issued outside the US add 1% to the card rate on every plan. The third-party transaction fee applies only if you take payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments, on top of that provider’s own fee.
When an upgrade pays for itself
On card fees alone, with yearly billing:
- Basic → Grow: $50 more a month for 0.2 points less: worth it from about $25,000 a month of card sales.
- Grow → Advanced: $220 more a month for 0.2 points less: from about $110,000 a month.
- With another payment provider: Basic → Grow saves 1 point of third-party fee, so it pays from about $5,000 a month through that provider.
Higher plans also add staff accounts and other features, which may matter more than the fee saving.
What a store pays on a $50 order
With Shopify Payments and a domestic card:
- Basic: 2.9% + 30¢ = $1.75
- Grow: 2.7% + 30¢ = $1.65
- Advanced: 2.5% + 30¢ = $1.55
- Plus: 2.25% + 30¢ = $1.43
With 500 orders a month at $50, Basic costs $875 in card fees plus $29, and Grow $825 plus $79: the same total. Above that volume, Grow is cheaper.
Shopify Payments or another provider?
On Basic, a provider charging 2.9% + 30¢ plus Shopify’s 2% third-party fee costs 4.9% + 30¢, $2.75 on a $50 order, against $1.75 with Shopify Payments. Use a different provider only if you need it for a reason other than price. See Stripe vs PayPal fees.
Outside the US
Shopify’s card rates and prices are different in each country: UK stores pay from 2% + 25p, Australian from 1.7% + 30¢ and Canadian from 2.8% + 30¢ on Basic. See Shopify Payments fees by country.
