GST for Australian Online Sellers

By Selling Fee Tools team ·

GST touches an Australian online seller in two ways: the sales you make once you’re registered, and the fees marketplaces charge you. This guide covers both, using the Australian Taxation Office’s pages and each platform’s Australian fee pages, checked in October 2026. It isn’t tax advice; check your own position with the ATO or a tax agent.

The rate

  • GST is 10% on most goods and services sold in Australia.
  • GST-free sales carry no GST, for example most basic food and exports.

When you have to register

  • Register within 21 days once your GST turnover reaches A$75,000, or A$150,000 for a non-profit body.
  • GST turnover means your current turnover, this month and the previous 11, or your projected turnover, this month and the next 11.
  • Exports are GST-free, but they still count towards your GST turnover, so a business selling mostly overseas can still reach the threshold.
  • Below it you can register voluntarily, and should then stay registered for at least 12 months.

Working out GST in a price

  • Adding GST: multiply the price before GST by 1.1. A$100.00 + GST is A$110.00.
  • Removing GST from a GST-inclusive price: GST is one eleventh of it. A$110.00 contains A$10.00 of GST. Taking 10% off A$110 gives the wrong answer, A$99.00.

The GST calculator adds or removes GST for one price or a list.

GST on marketplace fees

PlatformHow GST applies to its fees
eBay.com.auFees are shown and charged including 10% GST for sellers registered in Australia, unless you’ve given eBay your ABN and registered for tax-exempt status
Amazon.com.auFees are quoted excluding GST; 10% is added
Etsy10% GST is added to fees for shops that haven’t added a tax ID
ShopifyPlan and card rates are listed in AUD; the pricing page doesn’t say how GST applies

If you’re registered, you can usually claim back the GST in these fees.

What registration does to a sale

A A$25 item, Amazon.com.au, Everything Else, Professional plan:

  • Not registered: fees are A$3.75 + A$0.38 GST = A$4.13, and you keep A$20.87.
  • Registered: fees are A$3.75 (GST claimed back), but you owe A$25 ÷ 11 = A$2.27 GST on the sale, and you keep A$18.98.

Overseas sellers

An overseas business selling low-value imported goods, services or digital products to Australian consumers counts those sales towards the A$75,000 threshold, and must register and charge GST once it reaches it. Goods worth A$1,000 or less are then taxed at the point of sale rather than at the border.
